Chapter 18

I saw a silhouette in the doorway, but thought I was dreaming. It wasn’t until I woke up that I realized it had been real. Charles had been standing in the doorway watching me sleep.

For the next week and a half, I felt pangs of guilt. My body now had strong needs and desires that I couldn’t deny. But Jessica was my friend, and if Charles and I started anything, it would be cheating for him, and betrayal for me. That wasn’t fair to her. Of course, I had to keep in mind that she might not come back at all.

Charles asked me out to a movie and dinner two weeks after we kissed. I was nervous about what would happen when we returned home, wondering how far it would go this time. Part of me was scared to find out, and another part was eager to find out.

We watched a romantic comedy, and then followed it with a less formal dinner. Again, he was a perfect gentleman, holding open doors and pulling out chairs for me. If I stood from the table, he stood when I left and when I returned. I’d never had such treatment before. I almost didn’t know how to respond. He did this all like it was in his blood to do so. I’d never seen him do any of these things for Jessica, but I was never with them in public.

When he walked me to my door this time, he didn’t offer to kiss me, but he stroked my hair gently. He pulled me into his arms and held me there. When he pulled away to go to his room, he said, “Goodnight, Annie.” Then he disappeared into his room for the night.

Caught up in the scent of his cologne and the whirlwind of emotions and desires I was experiencing, I went in my room and took my clothes off. In bed, I replayed the evening in my mind. It wasn’t until I was on the verge of sleep that I realized what had happened.

He called me Annie. At least I thought he had. Thinking back on it, it sure seemed like that was what he said. I fell asleep trembling, wondering if I was losing my mind.

I went downstairs for breakfast the next morning to find that Charles had already left. It was Saturday, so I knew he hadn’t gone to work. He hadn’t left a note, so I sat down at the table to decide how I wanted to spend the day. That’s when I saw the book.

At first, I didn’t think much of it. After all, I’d seen thousands of books in my life. But when I stood to leave the table, I caught a glimpse of the title and froze.

Like someone in a time machine, I found myself in the past. Suddenly, I wasn’t standing in Charles’s kitchen. I was in the library. It was late, and there was a bad storm crashing outside. I wheeled an empty book cart to the front of the library.
